Before that, the rate had hovered just above 10 — a level it had fallen to in the late 1990s.

In the early 90s, it was as high as 15 per 100,000 people.

The US did introduce an assault weapons ban in 1994, which lasted 10 years.

May have accounted for the fall in gun deaths in the late 1990's.

You saw a lot of crime taped off as the crack epidemic waned during the 90s. Murder rates in most American cities fell, sometimes dramatically.

You have seen school killings and spree killings increase following Columbine though.

Access to guns remains a constant in high murder rates compared to the rest of the world.

The past 20 years has seen the rise of 24-hour news cycles and the internet though.

Clearly shooting up the school is in the mind of too many disturbed teens. It’s a question of whether you think the blood of school kids is just watering the tree of liberty or not.

That’s interesting. Gun deaths have edged Lower.

Were they simply not reported in 90’s, or perhaps they were more singular in nature(and therefore less newsworthy) in the cities, rather than ‘group shootings’ such as schools or nightclubs etc that we see today?

Doc
Overall, the firearm death rate rose to 12 deaths per 100,000 people in 2016, up from 11 in 2015, according to the report released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Before that, the rate had hovered just above 10 — a level it had fallen to in the late 1990s.

In the early 90s, it was as high as 15 per 100,000 people.

There were guns in America 20 years ago, and I don’t recall the shootings like they are now. Sure there’s probably more about, but proportionately it’s likely to be the same. That’ suggests guns aren’t the issue. What’s happened to society in the last 20 odd years?

The Texas shooter was identified as posting "nazi" iconography...

How do Soviet Communist Hammer & Sickle and the newly homo co-opted rainbow flag badges that he wore constitute anything other than jewish communist?

The shooter didn't have the guts to commit suicide. Someone should have shot the prick in the stomach and let him die slowly and painfully.

As some of you know I have spent I reckon nigh on a year of my ol life in the beastly root in tootin US of A.... I have never seen a gun brandished by a civilian....in fact the only gun I ever had pulled on me was a robbery on our old video shop in about 86...annoying thing we found out it was a replica luger after...but I was not to know at the time handing over 100-00 odd quid.... So again this Oct I will be upping my life insurance and hitting LA san Diego and palm springs....pray for me...

There weren't enough people with guns to stop the shooter.

To quote the film 'fight club'... "I am Jack's complete and utter lack of surprise"

See my comments on the last identical thread for details.

Fucking joke of a country.

Our killings are not down to mental issues but little boys playing gangsters.

Sort our problems, and take guns off our streets, and we might be able to preach to others.

His father should certainly have locked the guns up. Sounds like he must have known that his son had some serious issues!

Re: Texas school shooting - multiple fatalities
True Ornchurch, but there would be far more deaths here if we were as dumb as the Americans are over guns and the 2nd amendment. Make it simple for a mentally disturbed person to get a gun, especially a semi-automatic one and the death toll here would rise massively. Sadly all countries have mentally disturbed people, so don't give them guns!

Branded...Youve been watching too much of the Clinton News Network.

He had a coat with Nazi Iron Cross, Communist (hammer and sickle pin) and other fascist and occult symbols.

they are all and the only facts right now. Parents should be held accountable for these weird loner kids that shoot people with Daddys weapons.

Re: Texas school shooting - multiple fatalities
Why are people worried about America's problems?

We have enough people over here being shot and stabbed so we need to sort ourselves out first.
